Obama and His Tilt Towards India

President Barack Obama the President of the United States of America, has many firsts to his credit during his present tour of India. Firstly, he is the first US President in history to have visited India during his first term as President. Secondly he has made it amply clear that he recognizes the importance of India in the geo-political scenario that is omnipresent in the world of the 21st century.

President Obama in a recent address to Members of Parliament charmed his hosts by speaking a few sentences in Hindi. He also said things that were music to Indian ears. He endorsed India's aspirations for a seat in the security council as a permanent member. In addition for the first time he mentioned that Pakistan must not be a haven for terrorists and also must bring the perpetuaters of the Mumbai attacks to book. Obama also endorsed India's stand that Kashmir issue was a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan and the USA had in real terms no role to play, except as a go between to facilitate talks between India and Pakistan.

Obama's visit is thus a historic visit and marks a water shed in relations between India and the United States. Ever since Ike made his visit to India, the USA always equated Pakistan with India. This is the first time that an American President is not visiting Pakistan along with India and thus a strategic decision has been taken to partner India further into the 21st century.

Thus, there is disquiet in Pakistan and China is wary of what may come out of this US-India cooperation. India is the dominant power in South East Asia with a large professional Army and it is for good reason that the US is backing India. In fact India is the only counter to Chinese hegemony in Asia. China's neighbors are scared of the Dragon and would be happy if some one can be a counterpoise to the Dragons fire. it must never be forgotten that a strong China has always been an expansionist China.

Obama has also realized that Islamic terrorism is a threat to world peace, hence his decision not to throw Afghanistan to the wolves. His address to the Indian members of parliament is a timely reminder that that the United States is aware of the dangers in a resurgent Islam.

The visit is over and we can only hope that this realization on the part of the USA about the importance of India is not put on the back burner once he reaches Washington
