When I first thought of writing on Obama's historic State of the Union speech he made few weeks back and its relevance to Sri Lanka, I had a doubt whether it would be too much for third world country to consider. My main ambition was to get Sri Lankan youth to look at Obama differently.

One significant factor for Obama to become the 44th President of USA was the youth vote. No presidential candidate in the history of USA got more youth attraction than Obama. At the time he made this speech, the situation for Obama was not that great. Few weeks back economist Dr. Razeen Sally who writes a column to one of Sri lankan papers "DailyFT" said "The American love affair with Barak Obama ended in Massachusetts with the shock upset victory of a Republican to take Edward Keneddy's old seat in the US Senate".

His speech is one of the strategies to re-gain the confidence of Americans on him but Obama's vision is noteworthy for anyone to take seriously. What can the Sri Lankan youth and politicians learn from his speech?

He starts his speech saying "despite all our divisions and disagreements; our hesitations and our fears; America prevailed because we chose to move forward as one nation, and one people". Don't you think this is what Sri Lanka needs today as a nation just after a major election? As a nation which endured a war for thirty year we'd love to hear this from our politicians.

Look at what he said after that. Can we force our politicians to say "Despite our hardships, our union is strong. We do not give up. We do not quit. We do not allow fear or division to break our spirit." But Obama used these exact words in his speech.

At the beginning he said "I hear about problems in the letters that I read each night. The toughest to read are those written by children - asking why they have to move from their home, or when their mom or dad will be able to go back to work". Can we expect Sri Lankan politicians to read letters sent by people? Whether Obama read these letters or not, by saying this he has showed people in USA that their President is taking things seriously. That's a great motivator for people to trust him and believe that they have a leader who cares for them.

Obama said "when I ran for Presidency, I promised I wouldn't just do what was popular. I would do what was necessary". What a lesson for Politicians who are afraid of taking bold decisions for the betterment of Sri Lanka. Or can you apply this for your personal life and respect hard truth?

Youth demanded to be number one always. But don't you think as a country we are sometimes happy with what we get than exploring our true potential? But Obama said in his speech "I do not accept second-place for the United States of America." What an attitude to have? Can you have the same spirit and make Sri Lanka a better country? Not only for a country, but also for your life!

As the second most important point he said "we need to encourage American innovation". Even in a tough economy he insists on the importance of trying out new things and investing in innovative technology as he needs to be the President of a nation that leads the global economy. Are we innovative enough as Sri Lankans? We are risk aversive as a nation which is not very supportive of innovation. It's time for us to learn from Obama.

The third point he made was "we need to export more of our goods. Because the more products we make and sell to other countries, the more jobs we support right here in America". Are we looking at exporting things other than tea, rubber, coconut and garments? Even if you are very young it's not too early to think about what you can export from Sri Lanka. Whatever your age if you need to progress in your life, having an "export mindset" right from the early stage is a real bonus.

Fourth point he made was investing in "skills and education of people". He said "In the 21st century, one of the best anti-poverty programmes is a world-class education". This is so important for you as youth because it's the right time to realize the value of education and improving skills. Education is a real investment for a youth and your whole life will depend on how seriously you take this. Never stop learning and make it a habit.

If you can remember Obama's election theme it's "Change we can believe in". He said in his speech "I never suggested that change would be easy, or that I can do it alone". Obama is motivating people in USA to contribute for this change. This is exactly what we need today in Sri Lanka. We are waiting for the government to give us everything or blaming them for all. But are we understanding that we have a role to play in positively changing Sri Lanka? If you don't realize this as a youth you will never learn this later. It's your duty to make it and don't expect or wait till someone else changes Sri Lanka.

We all are looking at him as a politician of the new millennium. There is a lot we can get from him and change our attitude towards making Sri Lanka a better country. Change Sri Lanka! This is the best thought you can digest today.

American women's issues have rather changed in accordance with the continuously evolving world of today. Women are faced with many major issues that are provoking most women's rights activists and feminists. Although women of America couldn't have had more equality and freedom, emergent issues are on the minds of almost every American woman. Women have long argued that they comprise more than half of the American society; hence, this should be reflected on the composition of the Supreme Court. Many activists had called for gender rebalancing of the Supreme Court composition tens of years ago; however, observers are positive that Obama's presidency shall witness a fair change.

A higher percentage of teenagers are dropping out of schools as they are becoming mothers. Teenage mothers prefer to save time for a job that can provide money for their kids' needs. However, a mother, who hasn't earned her school degree, is left with few convenient career options. Teenage mothers' education has long been an important feminine issue. President Obama has led an initiative that would encourage every teenage mother to complete her studies. It is well recognized that the recent years have spotted an increased rate of women who experience domestic violence. Women have long been fighting for pay equity regardless of gender. Recent studies have shown that women are paid less than 80% of what men get for the same jobs. The past 10 years have witnessed many wars that were led by the US army; hence, women veterans have never been more demanding for better caring services. Obama is sponsoring a legislation that will secure more federal funds which would be invested in women veteran care programs.

Women's issues are at the heart of President Barak Obama. The new president is bound by an obligation to solve problems that are hindering the welfare and prosperity of women in America. Many consider Obama a feminist leader who shall be remembered by historians as a president with a big heart for all American women.

A Review of Barack Obama's the Audacity of Hope

In his book, The Audacity of Hope, President Barak Obama addresses issues that catapulted him to fame and brought the hope that he would be a prominent presidential election candidate. The book is originally his speech in Illinois state elections for senate chamber which has been delivered in 2004 in only 20 minutes. Later in 2006 he published that speech under the title "Audacity of Hope" that has the same themes he touched upon in the campaign speech in 2004.

Chapter one

The first chapter of the book is dedicated to two American parties, Democrats and Republicans. In this chapter, Obama contents that the congress is now more partisan than other times and that these two parties should overlook the differences and show collegiality and fellow feeling. He is not a supporter of mere partisan stance by the democrats against Republicans, nor does he agree with the old and worn out partisan poses or the Republicans. He hopes that Democrats show a sense of cooperation, while adhering to the central trends of the party.

Chapter two

He then in chapter two has recourse to politician behavior in the American political and social scene, asserting that in the age of information, not any of the politicians can remain exempt from the public scrutiny in the case of blunder. He calls for more adherences to political values in the face of conflict for sheer power. He finally asserts that in order to provide a center for children to thrive in, the families should have an unshakeable foundation and for that, supportive policies and personal responsibility must be dominant among the collective attitudes toward family.

Obama's Chance for the White House

Barak Obama is starting to gain popularity in the polls and is giving Hillary Clinton a run for her money. I kind of like him for a Democrat, but not completely. I mean he's a good speaker and has some charisma, but he's not someone I'd want running this country.

Barak Obama is a Senator from the Great State of Illinois. Not much is known about him and his leadership skills, primarily because he hasn't been around for a long time. This has advantages as well as disadvantages. People are crying for an average man or woman to make a legitimate run at the White House. However, Obama isn't someone I'd call average for the majority of Americans.

Most Americans don't sniff cocaine or smoke the green stuff when they are younger. The liberal outlets will have you to believe otherwise. Obama wrote a book about his past. That saved the Clinton machine from having to dig the dirt out on him. The majority of the left wing Democrats will overlook this. However, most independents and free thinking people won't. Let's be honest here, he's not going to win over any Republican swing voters.

Another thing that hurts him is his name. Barrack Hussein Obama doesn't sound good to most Americans. I'm not being judgmental here. I'm just stating the truth from the average American. People are uneasy about the sound of his name. I won't go any further, because the liberals will try to dissect this into something it's not.

If Obama gets his act together, he may be able to make Vice President. That is only if Hillary Clinton decides to pick him. We cannot forget about Al Gore. He could put up a real fight for the White House or Clinton or Gore could pick Richardson from New Mexico as a running mate. Nothing is set in stone for Obama.

I do like his speaking skills and I admire his ability to gather large crowds wherever he goes. If the man wants to win the Presidency, he'll have to overcome many obstacles. If he can do it, all the power to him. If he doesn't, he can always say he gave a good try. I do believe he stands a better chance in the race than Joseph Biden.

Just make it easy on yourself and vote red in '08!

Does Obama's Home Loan Modification Program Actually Work?

According to the report, one of the main objectives of the plan was to provide beneficial home loan modification facilities which would help troubled American homeowners to redeem their mortgage loan in a more comfortable manner through reduced interest rates and lowered monthly installment payments.

The plan is specifically designed to address the mortgage delinquency levels and provide opportunities for money lenders to offer effective loss mitigation programs to prevent further foreclosures from taking place. The main idea is to help 3 to 4 million Americans keep their homes, and lead a less stressful financial life. However, there are varied results and opinions which often contradict each other regarding the effectiveness of the HAMP program. The article tries to discuss the loan modification program's success amongst the mortgage debtors.

The basic question asked by many concerned Americans today is whether the loan modification plan is actually working, and whether stats support the claims and promises put forward by U.S. President Barak Obama prior to his presidency. As per the report submitted by the Treasury Department in November 2009:

The total number of notices sent by the moneylenders to mortgage loan defaulters is 3.137 million, and these debtors are potentially eligible for the Obama loan modification program.
The trial period plan offering the HAMP facilities is to be extended, and the plan should be made more effective, since only 33 percentages of the total 3.137 million are eligible, or likely to qualify for the existing plan conditions.
Till date only 759,408 or 73 percent of the total number of trial HAMP home loan modification applicants have been able to avail the program benefits and able to retain their homes.
The basic objective of the HAMP plan is to prevent mortgage debtors and delinquents from filing for bankruptcy and avoiding foreclosures. However, during the three-month trial period only 30,650 or 4 percent of the total applicants were provided the much required facilities.
Totally only 31,382 or 4 percent of the total number of HAMP applicants ended up receiving a permanent loan modification.
Out of a total of 3 to 4 million possible HAMP applicants, looking at the current rate of individuals actually preventing the foreclosures, the federal and state governments need between 2,968,618 to 3,968,618 more successfully loan modifications to sustain the Obama plan.
During the HAMP trial period, the applicants have to be consistent in making at least three of the "modified monthly payments" on time, to reap addition benefit of the program. It is possible for the trial applicants to avoid the foreclosure only if they adhere to the HAMP plan for a longer time. According to the report, 360,165 trials were started in the month of August 31, 2009. For further analysis of the HAMP plan, the experts say they need some additional data coming up in the coming months to give a more accurate picture about how successful the HAMP program is likely to be.

The HAMP plan sounds great as far as federal loan modification is concerned, and theoretically speaking the vast majority of the mortgage defaults should benefit through the plan. However, the report submitted by the Treasury Department highlights certain facts which need to be properly addressed to for sustained success of the Obama initiative plan.
